Bathroom Color Schemes – Neutrals
1. Elegant Shades of Gray
Neutral colors don’t need to be boring. A great example of an often-underestimated color is gray. This beautiful, timeless color is often used in a single, flat tone across bathrooms. However, you can approach this theme in a more sophisticated way.
I actually find gray to be the best paint color if you are looking for a more modern take on a truly neutral space. The key is to include in your color choices a wide enough range of tones. Gray can be both warmer thanks to the addition of some browns (taupe grey is a fantastic example) or colder, leaning into a brighter shade. Don’t be afraid to mix and match!
Gray is also a beautiful option if you like your bathroom to be a relaxing space similar to a spa. The inherent neutrality of this color creates a space that is elegant without being overwhelming to the senses. You can always add a few accents with matte black accessories or some greenery.
2. Delicate Beige
Another great choice for an understated bathroom is a beige color scheme. The light tones of beige naturally complement any existing wooden furniture you may also have, as well as being elegant and timeless.
Especially in recent times, with the increasing popularity of neutral and minimalist interiors, you’ll have plenty of choices when it comes to beige bathroom accessories. Given beige’s inherent low-contrast nature, make sure to layer different shades to add depth to your space.
You should also consider a delicate beige color scheme if you’re working with a small bathroom. You’ll be surprised at how much natural light even a light beige coat of paint can help reflect! You’ll add warmth to your space while, at the same time, giving it a more open feel.
3. Neutral Must-Haves
If you are working with an already neutral bathroom, you may want to stick to a simple palette. Especially if you’re renting, this simple solution can be an easy way to expand the basic color scheme without needing to make big changes.
I especially like how easy it is to layer basic neutral colors. The different tones help add depth and visual interest to the bathroom effortlessly. For instance, pairing a beige bath mat with white tiles will immediately make your bathroom feel cozier.
This color scheme is also perfect for smaller spaces. Neutrals in this palette are elegant and inclusive of darker tones but will not visually close up your bathroom. On the contrary, the broad but cohesive color selection will tie your decor together and give a more airy, organized feel to the room.
4. Off-Whites
A basic all-white bathroom is a thing of the past. Modern bathrooms are all about off-whites. These tones help you avoid the sterile look of a crisp white wall, introducing some variation and warmth into the space. I also love the idea of pairing off-whites with delicate shades of beige or green. It reminds me of spring nature and baby’s breath flowers – so charming!
Of course, this is definitely one of the lightest neutral palettes, making it a perfect match for a small bathroom.
Choosing an off-white color scheme as your basis can also give you more flexibility when it comes to changing up your decor in the future. Whether you want to add new accent pieces or turn over some of your older decor, off-white colors will be extremely easy to pair. I love a sustainable color scheme that can grow alongside your taste and needs over time.
Bathroom Color Schemes – Blues
5. Wild Coast
I absolutely wanted to include a coastal color scheme in this list. The combination of light blues and beige is not only timeless but also extremely sophisticated. These colors will help you create a clean look and make your space feel as airy as a windy day on the coast. The dark tone will let you instead include a few accent pieces or wooden items for stylish finishing details.
Bonus tip: a great way to implement this color scheme is to opt for a pale blue tile wall for your shower. Especially in a classic pattern like mosaic, it will look just gorgeous!
6. Classic Navy
One of the more popular bathroom colors for darker designs is navy blue. Depending on what other colors you include in your palette, this shade can become moody or preppy. In this color scheme, you find it combined with a powdery light blue, as well as burnt orange and white accents. The orange tone can easily be swapped for copper if you’re thinking of upgrading any of your metal hardware.
Be mindful of using the darker shades in the scheme on your bathroom walls. Dark colors tend to visually close up your space. Only commit to very dark walls if you have a good amount of natural light or a large enough bathroom.
7. Sea-Side Elegance
A more delicate take on the coastal theme, this color scheme takes inspiration from sandy beaches and foamy ocean waves. You’ll see that there is only one dark accent color, making this palette a good choice if you prefer tone-on-tone decor. For instance, warm white walls will be a perfect match for your display of crisp white towels and robes.
These colors can work great for any coastal interior or even in a small space like a powder room. In particular, the warm beige is a perfect candidate for floor tile designs, brightening up the room and making it more cozy.
Bathroom Color Schemes – Greens
8. Forest Green Shades
Green bathrooms feel so luxurious in my opinion. I wanted to start with a more intense palette for this color: a forest shade of green. Similar to evergreen foliage and deep, green marble, this color scheme is all about embracing the different shades of green as they are most often found in nature.
The dark colors are gem-like and can help turn your bathroom into a glamorous dream. Green is also a great color to match with metals. For example, consider enhancing this color scheme with golden light fixtures. A match made in interior design heaven!
9. Elegant Sage Green
Sage green is a lighter shade that has become incredibly popular with interior designers amongst the different colors available in the green palette. Nowadays, it’s a trademark of any stylish bathroom. Its main advantage compared to a deep, forest green is that it appears almost neutral thanks to the great balance of warm and cold tones in it.
In this color scheme, I have paired it with a dark green for accent pieces, as well as a pink gray to further enhance its more delicate side. Sage green always reminds me of chic, timeless interiors that appear elegant without being formal. If contemporary classic is what you want, this is the bathroom color scheme you need!
10. Green & Pink Combo
I am a huge fan of the green and pink color combination (as I’m sure you can tell from the blog colors ๐). It’s whimsical without being excessive. It’s also perfect if you are looking for a colorful but delicate palette for your space.
The stark contrast between pink and green is impactful but not overwhelming, making it easy to manage as you combine different pieces of bathroom furniture and decor. I would recommend using lighter green for your wall tile designs or paint colors and sticking to the pinks for movable decor and accent items. This will provide a nice semi-neutral base for your secondary color to pop!
Bathroom Color Schemes – Pinks & Reds
11. Beautiful Mauve
If you’re looking for an unexpected color scheme for your bathroom, consider including mauve in your palette. This color pairs exceptionally well with burgundy as well as lighter browns, placing it in between warm and cold tones.
This palette screams feminine elegance and can be a great option if your bathroom is connected to a walk-in closet or vanity area. I also like the ability to use this color scheme if you have wooden furniture in your bathroom. No matter how dark or rustic your pieces may be, these pink shades will complement them beautifully.
If you are ready to fully commit to the color scheme, you can also use mauve for an accent wall in your bathroom. especially if you’re working with a narrow and long space, this can help you create a stylish focal point for your layout.
12. Dreamy Lavender
Lavender has always been one of my favorite lighter colors. I love how easily it pairs with dark purple, wooden materials, and gold accents. This is also a unique color scheme for your bathroom as lavender palettes tend to be more popular in bedrooms and living rooms.
With this color scheme, I wanted to help you create a delicate and elegant bathroom. The goal was to recreate the feel of walking through a Provence lavender field on a late spring morning (if you don’t know what I’m referring to, check them out here!).
If you like the color scheme but are a bit afraid to fully commit to the lavender and purple, consider using these colors mostly for smaller pieces like rugs & decor. Especially when combined with a variety of shapes and materials, they are sure to stand out!
13. Intense Burgundy
Burgundy is one of the best bathroom colors if you’re trying to create a moody, luxurious bathroom. This color scheme could belong in a private club or a beautiful turn-of-the-century Victorian mansion.
Centering your bathroom palette around burgundy is also a great way to make your space feel a bit more private. For instance, if you have a powder room that receives too much direct sunlight throughout the day, adding dark walls or burgundy decor can help balance the outdoor lighting.
Another great reason to choose this color scheme is if you’re trying to match mid-century modern furniture. Burgundy and the complementary tones I have included will be a stunning match to the deep wooden tones typical of that style.
14. Passionate Red
If you are ready for bold colors, a red bathroom color scheme could be what you’re looking for. In my design, I have included deep red as a secondary color as it can be a very challenging tone to include on a large-scale design. Usually, when I work with red palettes, I like to focus more on a geranium shade. This type of color maintains the brightness of red vibrant colors while being less overwhelming on the space and the eyes.
Deeper reds are then perfect to pair with light greens and beiges for accent decor and fabric touches like your shower curtains. Overall, this is a color scheme of vibrant colors, perfect if you want your bathroom to feel lively and energetic at all times.
Bathroom Color Schemes – Pastels
15. Happy Yellow
If you are looking for color schemes for smaller bathrooms but are bored of neutral or white options, a pastel yellow is just what you need. This delicate but joyful shade can be paired with mustard tones, as well as beiges and pinks to deliver a beautiful palette.
The light tones will open up your space and give the impression of a bigger room without you even trying. I also love how cheerful this palette feels. It’s a great way to turn your bathroom into a fun oasis of peace for yourself!
16. Multi-color dream
Bright colors don’t need to be overwhelming. This pastel palette, inclusive of yellow, purple, and blue is a perfect example of bold colors that don’t overstimulate the senses. The delicate but fun nature of this palette makes it a great option if you’re trying to design a cute space that reminds you of spring flowers.
I also love the idea of including pastel shades in small vanities. There are so many options for bathroom vanity decor in these tones – you’ll find the perfect setup in a matter of no time. For example, this purple jewelry holder will immediately make your bathroom feel more glamorous while being, at the same time, very practical!
17. 70s Tropical
You’ll love this bathroom color scheme if you’re trying to recreate the beauty of a tropical sunset in your space. These tones, a combination of accent colors and more traditional shades like navy and burnt orange, will help you to completely transform your space.
I especially recommend you consider this palette if you like mid-century modern products or 70s-style bathrooms. The bold colors used in color blocking and fun pattern techniques are an absolute staple of bathrooms of those times!
Bathroom Color Schemes – Browns
18. Coffee House
When we talk about brown in interior decor, people usually default to beige or wooden tones. However, brown shades are incredibly versatile, and this is a color scheme that embraces the full range this color has to offer. We have darker colors, reminding you of chocolate and dark leather shades, as well as warm beiges and deep sand tones.
This new color scheme is perfect for creating a sultry bathroom filled with warmth and personality! Bonus points if you can pair it with beautiful, dark wooden floors.
19. Deep Orange
An orange color scheme can be intimidating at first. It’s a bright color and, especially in today’s trends, not as widely used in spaces like a bathroom. However, orange dark tones can make the perfect secondary color in a beige and yellow palette. The darker hues tend to pair very well with wooden vanities and cabinets, further building on the visual warmth of these pieces.
20. Rustic Wooden Tones
If you’re working with a rustic/farmhouse architectural design with wooden panels or exposed beams, this color scheme is exactly what you need for your bathroom. These colors will enhance the wooden accents already existing in your bathroom, helping you highlight their texture and further enriching the warm atmosphere.
I also included a beautiful green shade to add an organic touch to the color scheme, introducing even more natural elements into the design.
21. Boho Browns
If you already have a boho design in your living room or bedroom, consider carrying over the style for your bathroom remodel. This color scheme, rooted in organic and desert-like shades perfectly leans into the casual but warm aesthetic of this design style.
Of course, we have a tan, and dark brown, as well as a sand shade and a beautiful organic green. Note how the palette also includes an off-white shade. Make sure to steer clear of bright, crisp whites for this design. They are far too cold for bohemian decor!
