Pin It For Later!

There is always a point of the year when your beautiful, layered bedding goes from being a cozy bedroom highlight to an impractical inconvenience. After all, hot weather doesn’t exactly pair well with thick blankets and 4 rows of velvet throw pillows. There is nothing worse than a hot and bothered night of sleep – you don’t need that!
That’s why it’s so important to upgrade your bedding once summer comes around. Your bedding is not only a stylish element of your bedroom but also a foundation for good sleep quality. A great example of why home decor and interior design need to be user-centric and dynamic.
In this post, we’ll look at how to refresh your bedding for the new season. From gaining a basic understanding of what fabrics and colors can work best to choosing the right design for your space, get ready to transform your bedroom and enjoy the best sleep of your life!
Summer Bedding: Must-Haves & The Basics
When it comes to something as important as the quality of your sleep, you’ll want to do some research before jumping into shopping. I know – not the most fun part – but I promise you, you won’t regret it! Finding the right colors, materials, and upkeep for your new bedding will save you plenty of money and time down the line.
As you learn more about what your space needs, you’ll also want to keep an eye on the design. For instance, start by narrowing down your bedroom color palette to a few colors and make note of the style of the furniture and textiles you already know. By doing so, you’ll ensure that your bedding can add a fresh but cohesive touch.
The Main Differences With Winter Bedding
From a purely visual standpoint, colder seasons require far more layers of bedding, thick blankets, and duvets. This is not only due to a practical reason but also to make a physically cold room feel more cozy and inviting. Summer interiors, on the other hand, embrace a more airy design that almost blends with the outdoors. Your bedroom linens should bring brightness and freshness into your space, opening up your room and fully leaning into the more energetic spirit of the season.
Additionally, you’ll have to curate a different sleeping experience. While during colder months you may want to feel snuggled up by your bedding, this feeling can be overwhelming in summer – especially for hot sleepers on hot summer nights. Elements like colors, materials, your average use of AC, and how well you regulate your body temperature are all factors you need to consider. An overall crisp and breathable design is an absolute must-have.

Summer Colors & Patterns
You don’t need to completely re-think your bedroom color palette just because you have a few dark colors or are working with a more moody space. However, I do think that opting for lighter fabrics and shades for your duvet cover and sheets during warmer months is a non-negotiable.
More delicate shades and patterns will better reflect all the natural light coming into your bedroom, giving the impression of a brighter, more airy space. Light-colored fabrics will also not retain as much heat if your bedroom is exposed to direct sunlight during the hottest hours.
Here are some of my favorite options when it comes to summer bedding colors and patterns:
- Neutrals: you just can’t go wrong with neutrals in summer. They match almost any style, can easily be matched also to spring and early fall decor, and feel light and crisp on the eye. Don’t limit yourself to the classics and consider some shades from the “new neutrals” too. Sage green, for example, is perfect if you’re working with a very dark bedroom and need something with lower contrast.
- Florals: I am partial to a good floral pattern. Nothing screams life and energy like a delicate and joyful spread of flowers on a white duvet. Of course, this design works in various colors, giving you some added flexibility compared to a solid bed set. I especially love this for a boho bedroom.
- Pastels: these shades are another popular choice when it comes to summer bed linens. They are light, airy, fun, and bold without being overwhelming. In other words, they are everything you need to leave behind the dreary winter months and embrace the colorful joy of summer!
Choosing The Right Fabrics & Materials
In order to achieve a cool feel, you’ll want to favor natural materials. Synthetic fibers tend to cause overheating and sweating even in the best of settings. Pieces like linen sheets instead are exactly the type of breathable fabric you need to stay fresh and comfortable through the night. As an added bonus, natural fibers make for much more sustainable shopping. They tend to be higher quality and pretty evergreen, meaning you’ll be able to reuse them for a long time to come.
The most common fabrics include:
- Linen: this fabric is the poster child for lightweight summer bedding. Elegant, sturdy, and beautifully organic, it makes for a fantastic addition to any space and any style.
- Cotton: if you don’t love the casual look of linen and are looking for something more formal or classic, cotton sheets are what you need to face the warmer weather. For an extra luxurious feel, look into high-thread Egyptian cotton. You’ll never want to leave your bed again!
- Mixed Fabrics: this is a great option if you are looking for the freshness of linen but the clean look of cotton. If you go for a mixed fabric, make sure to check the percentage split. Depending on what look and feel you’re going for, you’ll want to see a higher percentage of one or the other.
As far as your down comforters are concerned, they may be too thick for warm weather. Alternative comforters with a light filling or no filling at all can be a better fit for this time of the year. Something like a layered duvet is also a great choice. These duvets come with multiple pieces that you can tie together and layer in different ways depending on the season. I had this in the past and found it incredibly convenient!

Combining Style & Functionality With Practical Layering
Lastly, I wanted to talk a bit about styling. If you love interior design, you may not want to give up on all of your beautiful layers for the sake of comfort. Trust me, I get you. Luckily, you can still include some layering while keeping things functional. All you need is to do so very intentionally.
For instance, choosing oversized throw pillows in a very different texture from your duvet set can create a strong sense of depth without needing a ton of additional pieces. Similarly, a thin cotton blanket in a bold, high-contrast color can keep the element of visual interest without adding unnecessary bulk to your bed. Spend some time thinking about what look you’re going for and be strategic with your purchases!

Beautiful Summer Throws
You may think warm nights make a beautiful throw a useless accessory. However, I have to disagree. Hear me out. A thin but chic cotton blanket is exactly what you need to fight off the AC chills and bring some beautiful but functional layering into your design.

Gorgeous Quilts
Quilts are a great way to add a more luxurious look and some extra weight to your summer bedding. After all, warm summer nights often call for high AC, which, in turn, calls for a beautiful extra blanket. A quilt is also a better choice if you want a piece that can work even for cooler months. Plus, they are available in so many different colors and patterns!
